Beginner Courses

DSC03664.JPG

At Adelaide Swords Club we run designated beginner courses for people of all ages who have not fenced before but would like to give it a try! We run four adults' and four kids' courses each year (one per school term).

All specialised fencing equipment is provided and the courses are run by experienced coaches. Fencers need to wear long track pants, indoor sport shoes or sneakers and a tshirt, and bring a water bottle.

Adults

The adult beginner course at ASC has two parts: an initial two-hour try session and a five-week course. All sessions are run on Wednesday evenings. The course is suitable for anyone aged over 16 of either gender.

In the initial try session we go through all the basic footwork and bladework skills, and finish off with come competititive fencing bouts. The session runs 6:30-8:30pm, and there is no obligation to continue afterwards.

However, if you're bitten by the fencing bug, we run a five-week course following each try session. Over the course we will cover more in-depth bladework techniques and encourage you to fence with other members of the club. These classes are 6:30-7:30pm.

The cost of the two-hour session is $50 (which includes a $20 FencingSA registration fee), and the five-week course is a further $100. We highly encourage pre-payment to secure your place in the try session, as these have been very popular.

In 2012 we will be running courses on the following dates:

Term 1: 15 Feb (try session), 22 Feb, 29 Feb, 7 Mar, 14 Mar, 21 Mar
Term 2: 9 May  (try session), 16 May, 23 May, 30 May, 6 June, 13 June
Term 3: 25 July (try session), 1 Aug, 8 Aug, 15 Aug, 22 Aug, 29 Aug
Term 4: 17 Oct (try session), 24 Oct, 31 Oct, 7 Nov, 14 Nov, 21 Nov

Please note that the above dates are subject to change. To receive information and updates about courses please email us and we'll put you on the beginners' mailing list.

Kids

The children's beginner courses are five weeks long and run on Saturdays between 9am and 10am (parents are encouraged to stay and watch during the hour). They are suitable for both boys and girls, minimum age 9 years old.
In Term 1 we will be running a course on Monday evenings (6:30-7:30). If this proves to be as popular as the Saturday course we will run more in the other terms (dates are provided below provisionally anyway).

The course covers the basics of footwork and bladework, some fencing games, the basic rules and how to fence with all the electric gear. The cost of the course is $120, which includes a $20 Fencing SA registration fee.

What happens next?

Once you have completed the beginners' course, we encourage you to continue to fence with us. Kids are invited to join in our intermediate class, 10-11am on Saturdays. Adults are welcome to come along to training sessions on either Monday or Wednesday evenings, and if there is sufficient interest we run an intermediate class. There is also the option of having individual lessons with a coach.

To continue fencing, though, you will need to become a member of the club. We offer a $100 discount on membership for all graduates of the beginner courses, to take into account the cost of the course. Membership is per financial year (July-June), but can also be purchased for 6 months (Jan-June).

Full year discounted rate: $90
Half year discounted rate: $30
